SKILLOUNDIA

A newly built village in a verdant hilly region. It is 5 km east of krestena and has 557 residents.

SIGHTS

THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE DORIC TEMPLE on the hill, 1 km NE of the village, which was considered to be the renowned temple of Athena of Skilloudia. Many statues were found at the excavation (1880) and its dimensions are 35×15m. In 1938 another temple was found in the same area. It was full of marble statues which are now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in Patra. And in 1978, yet another temple was discovered. This city of temples seems to identify with the "Aipon" or "Hipion", one the six cities of the people of "Minies".

THE POST CLASSICAL CEMETERY (exavated in  1971)  on the peripheral road of the village with twenty graves, enclosed by four walls. Many treasuries were found there.

ST. GEORGE (a basilic church built in 1892) in the centre of the old village, with a wooden icon screen and built with material taken from ancient temples in the area.

THE RED CHURCH the magnificent Bizantine temple of the   6th century. Its highest point is 1 metre. The building material was taken from the ancient temple of Skilloundia. It gets its name from the red roof tiles that have been pladed on the stonework.

ST. TRYFONAS a private basilic chapel (built in 1852) with a woodcut icon screen in  the «Babes» area 1,5 km west of the village. It has a beautiful view of Ancient Olympia and the Ionion Sea. There is a fair on February 1th in honour of the saint.
